INTERTEXTUAL IN THE NOVEL “A STUDY IN SCARLET” BY ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE AND “THE MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT STYLES” BY AGATHA CHRISTIE

The purpose of this study is to identify the intertextual content in the two novels,
namely the novel “A Study in Scarlet” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the novel “The
Mysterious Affair at Styles” by Agatha Christie, as well as to describe the problem of
hypograms, especially expansion and language games in the two novels.
This research uses descriptive analysis method. The data analysis technique is based
on reading comprehension. The data collection technique in this study was based on
primary data sources, namely the novel “A Study In Scarlett” by Conan Doyle and the
novel “The Mysterious Affair At Styles” by Agatha Christie, as well as secondary data
sources including theses, journals, and articles published in this study. significantly related
to this study.
The results of this study is, the researcher found how the intertextual relationship
between Doyle’s novel “A Study in Scarlett” and the novel “The Mysterious Affair At
Styles” by Christie was in the form of similarities in the main characters, Doyle’s novel “A
Study in Scarlett” more emphasis on the main character Sherlock Holmes with an eccentric
character that is rarely owned by any detective, narrated by Holmes’s friend, Dr. Watson.
Meanwhile, in the novel “The Mysterious Affair At Styles”, Christie does the same thing.
Furthermore, the researcher found that the similarities between the two main characters in
each novel were written from the point of view of third-person storytelling. This means
that the author is involved as an additional extra who acts as a storyteller for the main
characters. There are also similarities in the way the two detectives solve cases, both use
the method of deduction, but in her novel Agatha is more detailed in gathering information.
Overall, the language games used by Christie in “The Mysterious Affair at Styles” are
reflected in Poirot’s accent, while Doyle places more emphasis on the use of language that
intersects with science and spiritualism through Holmes' narration.
