AMERICAN CHARACTERISTIC AS REFLECTED IN THE NOVEL “THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER” BY MARK TWAIN (VIEWED FROM SOCIO-CULTURAL APPROACH)
This study aims to discuss about American characteristics as reflected in the
novel ―The Adventures of Tom Sawyer‖ by Mark Twain. In this research the
researcher focused on the characteristics of American and the factors that
influencing the characters of Tom and Huck Finn. The researcher choose to
analyze the characteristics in the novel, because their characters is influencing by
their society.
The methods used in this research are qualitative method and descriptive
method. In this study, the researcher uses research data from two sources: primary
and secondary. The primary data source is the novel "The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer" written by Mark Twain published in 1876. While secondary data sources
are materials that are taken in books or e-books, journals, and data on the internet
are related to research. Library research and internet-based research are applied in
order to collect secondary data that intends to enrich the completeness of this
research.
Based on research that has been conducted shows that, there are three
characteristics of American that contained in the novel. These characteristics
consist of materialism (about money or being rich), pragmatism (about think
practically, narrowly and instantly), and self-reliance (about ability to rely on
himself). By these characteristics there are some factors that influencing the
characters of Tom and also Huck Finn. The factors consist of two categories such
as internal and external factors. Internal factor is heredity or known as genetics.
The external factors or known as environmental factors. This factors divided by
three factors namely, social factors, cultural factors and economic factors.
