ANALYSIS OF GOTHIC ELEMENTS IN THE NOVEL “PET SEMATARY” BY STEPHEN KING (VIEWED FROM STRUCTURALISM APPROACH)

This research examine the gothic elements and dominant intrinsic
elements contained in the novel "Pet Sematary" by Stephen King. The
research aims to discover and understand the results of analyzing the
dominant intrinsic elements and determine the factors that build a sense of
horror and terror in the story through gothic elements in the novel "Pet
Sematary'' by Stephen King.
This research uses a structuralism approach to find out the intrinsic
elements and the gothic theory of Robert Harris in identifying the gothic
elements in the novel "Pet Sematary." The researcher also limits the
research on the plot using Gustav Freytag's pyramid. The method used in
this research is the descriptive analysis method. The narratives, dialogues,
and actions in the novel "Pet Sematary" served as the primary source
material for this research project's data collection and analysis.
The results of this study indicate that in the novel "Pet Sematary"
there are three dominant intrinsic elements: plot, setting, and theme.
Researcher have found that there are five essential parts to the plot of a
story; exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. The
setting in "Pet Sematary" is the new home for the Creed family, namely
Ludlow, Maine, the footpaths, pet cemetery, and Micmac burial ground.
The theme in this story is death, loss, death, and terror. In addition to this,
there are also seven gothic elements, including tension, visions, monster
creation, excessive emotion, women in distress, and metonymy of gloom.
