This research has focused on identifying the types of translation shifts used in
the translation of the thesis abstract of the English Language Education Study
Program at Khairun University. The thesis abstract was chosen because in the
abstract of scientific work it functions as a brief summary and the most important
points. This research uses qualitative method. It provides an overview of events or
situations or events, so this method is meant to collect basic data. The data were
taken from five thesis abstracts of the English Education Study Program of
Khairun University. In the process of identifying the and classifying the types of
translation shifts that are applied in the thesis abstract. Catford translation shift
theory was used. The result of the study shows that there are three types of
translation shifts used in the abstract, namely Level Shift (2), Structure Shift (5),
and Unit Shift (2)
