Muhammad Ridha, 2025 Students' Perception in Using Social Media toward
Their English Learning. Supervisor: Dr. Ali Ajam, S.Pd., M.Pd., as the first
supervisor and Dr. Roswita M. Aboe, S.Pd., M.A., as the second supervisor.
The aim of this research is to explore the students‘ perception regarding the use of
social media in their English learning. This research used mixed method. The
sample in this research consisted of all students at the 6th semester of English
Language Education at Universitas Khairun in Ternate. In collecting data, the
researcher used questionnaire consisting of 30 statements. The researcher also
administered interview to obtain deeper information. The findings indicate a
predominantly positive attitude toward social media, with students recognizing its
innovative and convenient nature for communication, information sharing, and
engagement. Platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are especially
favored for their audio-visual content, which enhances understanding and supports
vocabulary acquisition, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students frequently
use social media to access English-language content, engage in academic
discussions, follow educational creators, and develop new digital and creative
skills. Despite these benefits, challenges such as distraction, excessive screen
time, and the influence of informal language on formal communication were also
reported. Nevertheless, a significant majority expressed their intention to continue
utilizing social media in the future due to its accessibility and effectiveness. The
findings suggest that while social media presents some drawbacks, its role as a
supplementary learning tool for English language development is widely
appreciated and likely to remain relevant.
