A PRAGMATIC ANALYSIS OF MAXIM VIOLATIONS IN THE FILM PURPLE HEART

This study aims to analyze the forms of Grice's maxim violations in the
Purple Heart film, focusing on the types of maxims violated, the reasons
behind the violations, and their consequences.The approach used is
descriptive qualitative through content analysis techniques on dialogues
containing maxim violations.The data were analyzed using Grice's
pragmatic theory framework, and juxtaposed with Brown and Levinson's
politeness theory to evaluate their impact on the face of the interlocutor.
The results of the study showed that there were 15 violations of
maxims, namely violations of the maxim of relevance as many as 8 times,
3 quantities, 3 qualities, and 1 manner. The most dominant violation is the
maxim of relevance because the character often conveys things that are
not relevant to the topic being discussed for several purposes, namely,
such as joking, venting emotions, or conveying criticism implicitly. On the
other hand, the violation that almost never occurs is the violation of the
maxim of manner, which only appears once when a character conveys a
serious threat, but uses a joking tone. As a result, the message conveyed
becomes unclear and the dialogue feels ambiguous, because the delivery
does not follow the principle of the maxim of manner, namely "be clear"
and "avoid ambiguity"
This study shows that violating maxims does not always have a
negative impact on a conversation. On the contrary, in some situations,
especially violations of relevance, this strategy can actually protect the
feelings of the interlocutor and make communication more dynamic. For
example, by changing the topic or inserting humor, characters can convey
criticism or opinions without appearing to corner them. Thus, violating
maxims is not just a mistake, but a smart and multifunctional pragmatic
tactic.
