Tito Tri Setiawan, 2025. Students’ Difficulties in Writing Scientific Articles:
The Study of English Students During the Sixth Semester in the 2023/2024
Academic Year. Supervised by Dr. Hujaefa Hi. Muhamad, S.Pd., M.Hum. as the
first supervisor, and Indry Widyasti Anwar, S.Pd., M.A. as the second supervisor.
This research aims to find out the difficulties faced by eighth-semester students of
the English Education Study Program at Khairun University in writing scientific
articles based on their experiences during the Research Preparation and Seminar
course in the sixth semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. This research used a
qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research subjects consisted of
35 English students who were selected through purposive sampling, with the
consideration that they already had experience in writing scientific articles. Data
were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The results showed that the
students faced various difficulties, both in the main structure of IMRaD and other
elements. The three most dominant difficulties were identifying research gaps in
previous studies (77.1%), analyzing data with appropriate methods or formulas
(60%), and presenting data in statistical media (57.1%). In other elements,
students also still have difficulties in citing reference sources using APA style
(54.3%), finding supporting references (45.7%), and paraphrasing (42.9%). In this
research, students did not encounter significant difficulties in organizing research
findings into innovative conclusions/results (51.4%), writing abstracts (37.1%),
and summarizing the content of the research (42.9%). These findings indicate that
students' difficulties lie in the analytical and technical aspects of writing scientific
article.
