LANGUAGE USE BY SUNDANESE IN KUPAL BACAN (VIEWED FROM SOSIOLINGUISTIK APPROACH)
This study explores the use and maintenance of the Sundanese
language among the Sundanese diaspora community in Kupal Bacan,
Halmahera Island, an area where Indonesian and local dialects domi-
nate. The rationale for the research stems from the need to understand
how minority languages are preserved outside their native regions and
the sociolinguistic factors influencing language choices in multilingual
settings.
Using a qualitative approach, the study collected data through ob-
servations and recorded informal conversations among Sundanese
speakers, focusing on code-switching, language use in various social
contexts, and attitudes towards the language.
The findings reveal that the Sundanese community engages in
frequent code-switching between Sundanese, Indonesian, and local dia-
lects, with language choice depending on context, relationship, and for-
mality. Sundanese is predominantly used in informal settings, such as
family interactions and conversations among peers, reflecting the com-
munity's ethnic identity and cultural pride. In contrast, Indonesian is often
used in formal or transactional contexts, indicating its role as the national
language for broader communication. Key factors contributing to the sus-
tained use of Sundanese include strong social networks, cultural signifi-
cance, and positive attitudes towards language preservation. The inter-
generational transmission of Sundanese within families supports its on-
going use, while the community's perception of the language as a marker
of ethnic identity fosters its maintenance despite external pressures from
Indonesian. The study concludes that the Sundanese language contin-
ues to thrive as an essential part of cultural heritage, demonstrating resil-
ience and adaptability in a multilingual environment far from its original
homeland.
