MANISFETATION OF SELF NARRATIVE AND EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION IN TAYLOR SWIFT SELECTED SONG
This study aims to analyze how Taylor Swift forms a self-narrative
and expresses emotions through lyrics in three of her popular songs:
“This Is Me Trying,” “Mirrorball,” and “You're On Your Own, Kid.” This
research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with narrative and
expressive analysis methods, based on Paul Ricoeur's Narrative
Identity theory and Leonard B. Meyer's Emotional Expression theory.
Meyer. The analysis is conducted by dissecting the narrative
structure and emotional dynamics in song lyrics to reveal how Swift's
personal experiences shape her creative identity while creating
complex emotional effects.
The results show that Swift uses narrative mechanisms such as
reflective flow, identity metaphors, and personal confessions to
represent her transformation from vulnerability to self-awareness.
Meanwhile, emotional expression in her lyrics does not always come
in the form of emotional outbursts, but rather through delayed
expectations, inner tension, and melodic restraint that deepen the
affective impact. Thus, this study concludes that Swift's work is not
only a medium for self-expression, but also a complex representation
of human emotional experience in contemporary popular music.
