STUDENTS’ COMPETENCE IN WRITING ARGUMENTATIVE SENTENCES AT THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM OF KHAIRUN UNIVERSITY

This research was a descriptive qualitative study aimed at evaluating students’
competence in writing argumentative sentences. The subjects were sixth-semester
students of the English Language Education Study Program at Khairun University.
The analysis focused on five key aspects: Content, Organization, Vocabulary,
Grammar, and Mechanics. The results revealed that the average student score was
75.2, categorized as “Fairly Good,” indicating a moderate level of competence with
room for improvement. Among the aspects assessed, Content consistently received
the highest ratings, showing that students could generally present relevant ideas,
although depth and evidence were often limited. Organization and Vocabulary were
also relatively strong, while Grammar and Mechanics showed frequent errors in
structure, punctuation, and spelling. The highest individual score was 79, and the
lowest was 70, reflecting varied levels of proficiency across participants.
