IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING USING DESCRIBING PICTURES TECHNIQUE AT SMP NEGERI 4 HALMAHERA UTARA

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of the picture description
strategy could improve students' speaking ability at SMP Negeri 4 Halmahera Utara.
Speaking is used to communicate, such as making requests and giving speeches.
Through speaking, someone can share their knowledge, convey ideas, feelings, and
intentions to others. In the teaching and learning process, teachers must be able to create
or choose appropriate and good strategies. The picture describing strategy is one of the
strategies that can be applied in teaching English, especially teaching speaking ability.
This study is a pre-experimental study (quantitative research design). The subjects of
this study were 25 students from class VIII-C. It was selected using a convenient
sampling technique. The population of this study was students of class VIII-C. The
results of this study indicate that the Picture Describing strategy has a positive role in
improving the speaking ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Halmahera
Utara. This can be proven through the average score of students from pre-test to post-
test. The average score of the pre-test was 39.88, and the post-test was 59.24. This
means that the picture describing strategy can improve students' speaking ability,
although it is still in the moderate category.
